The Australian Government has linked the current round of visa extension reforms to a broader target for reducing net overseas migration over the coming years. Rather than legislating the changes through an amendment to the Migration Act 1958, the government is implementing them through regulation. That distinction matters for visa holders: regulatory change can move faster and attract less parliamentary scrutiny than a change to the Act itself.
Key Change One
Reported changes would limit the ability of some temporary visa holders to bring family members to Australia while their own visa remains temporary. The exact visa subclasses affected, and whether family members already in Australia are impacted, have not been confirmed.
Key Change Two
From 2 February 2026, the Australian Government closed many of the pathways that previously allowed temporary visa holders to switch between visitor, student, and temporary work visas while remaining in Australia. Visa holders who now want to move onto a different visa subclass, for example from a visitor visa to a student visa, generally need to apply from offshore rather than switching while in the country. The changes apply to new applications made from that date; they do not retrospectively affect a visa already held.
Key Change Three
Some temporary visa holders may face new limits on how long they can extend their stay onshore. This could affect working holiday makers, students nearing the end of their course, and other temporary visa holders who have previously relied on extensions to remain in Australia.
